Editing ...

So, I'm going to have a stab at NaNoEdMo ...

Now, this whole "editing" thing is a bit of a challenge for me. I mean, I can churn the stuff out, I can scan it as I go for obvious typos, grammatical disaster areas, and the occasional continuity lapse ... but things like tightening up the plot, making the characters more believable, adding credible detail to the setting ... hmmm.

I've shown last year's NaNo to a friend, who (remarkably enough) is still speaking to me; I got a list of stuff that made her wince. But I'm sure there's more wrong with it than just the few thousand words of criticism she sent me ... So: anybody have any ideas on how best to approach this? How do you take an objective look at what you've written, and work out how and where it's broken and needs fixing? Suggestions? Opinions? Anyone?
